Brief overview of Elering
Elering is an electricity and gas system operator that connects a system consisting of producers, various network undertakings, and consumers into a single whole. The functioning of the system as a whole is also important for end consumers, as it allows providing consumers with high-quality energy supply at reasonable costs. This is one of Elering’s most important objectives.

What is the Estonian energy system like and how does Elering manage it?
The Estonian electricity and gas system consists of domestic networks and connections to neighbouring countries, which enable the flow of energy between countries and cross-border energy trade.
Elering plans and manages the operation of the energy system in real time. This is especially important in the power system, as electricity generation and consumption must be in balance at all times. Sufficient pressure must be ensured in the gas transmission system so that gas would reach all consumers.
National transmission system
The national transmission system consists of 5,198 kilometres of high-voltage overhead lines, 284 km cable lines and 158 substations. Cross-border lines connect the Estonian electricity system to Finland and Latvia.
Gas transmission system
The gas transmission system consists of a 978-kilometres gas pipeline, four gas metering stations, and 36 gas distribution stations. The operational cross-border interconnections of the gas transmission network are with Latvia and Finland.

While Elering manages electricity and gas transmission systems, which carry large amounts of energy, electricity and gas reach end consumers through nearly 60 different distribution networks.
