Power exchange
Estonia is part of the pan-European electricity market, where electricity trading takes place through power exchanges.
The aim of the power exchange is to provide market participants trading electricity with a short-term, planned and standardised trading opportunity. The power exchange allows trading on an open platform to which every market participant has equal access and where the counterparty to the transaction is anonymous. Information on competition and market liquidity is made available to everyone, and the price and information on its formation are presented. Compared to bilateral trading, trading on power exchanges has lower transaction costs.
The Nord Pool power exchange operates in Estonia and the Baltic States. Important data characterising the electricity market, including information on electricity prices, international transmission capacities and energy flows, can be viewed on the Nord Pool market information page, where the information is available in both table and map form.
In cooperation with the system operators of the Nordic countries and the Baltic States, the Norwegian system operator Statnett maintains a map showing the state of the electricity system in the Baltic Sea region. Data on physical transfers of electricity from country to country and on the price of electricity are updated approximately once a minute. The electricity prices shown on the map are day-ahead prices, which are determined on the power exchange.
