Warmer weather reduces consumption of natural gas in April
In April, Elering’s transmission network supplied 395.5 gigawatt-hours of natural gas to consumers, which compared to April of the previous year was a 14 per cent smaller quantity.
The drop in consumption was caused by the weather in April, which was warmer than the long-term annual average.
In total, Estonia imported 393.7 gigawatt-hours of natural gas in April, which is also 14 per cent less than in April 2017. The lowest daily volume of natural gas reaching Estonia was 5.1 gigawatt-hours and the highest was 24.3 gigawatt-hours.
The transit volume through the pipeline in south-eastern Estonia from Russia to Latvia was 5.8 gigawatt-hours. No transit took place last year during the same period.
The transmission pipeline’s reserve capacity did not change from last April, remaining at 47.3 gigawatt-hours.
In April, the price of natural gas traded on the Lithuanian gas exchange GET Baltic was 19.30 per megawatt-hours in the Estonian bidding area. The average price in Latvia was 19.1 euros per megawatt-hour and in Lithuania, 18.97 euros per megawatt-hour. The average system price in the Baltics was 19.01 euros, remaining at the same level as March. The comparable price on the Finnish Kaasupörssi was 24.1 euros per megawatt-hour.
In early 2017, Elering’s smart network platform started gathering information on gas contracts. According to the platform, 54,700 places of consumption had a contract for purchasing gas. Nine hundred places of consumption buy gas from network service provider as general service. In early May, 1,100 places of consumption switched gas sellers.
As a result of the initial April balance settlement, balance providers’ portfolios totalled the following based on consumption:
