Hannes Kont will become head of the synchronization service and project director at Elering starting 1 July.

According to the chairman of the Elering management board, Taavi Veskimägi, Kont has a secure claim to being one of Estonia’s top specialists in the field of security and risk management. “We need Hannes’s knowledge and experience because disconnecting the power system from the Russian energy system and joining the Continental European system is largely an optimization project that besides technical competencies will require international relations and risk management abilities,“ added Veskimägi.

For his part, Kont said: “I’m glad to join Elering’s professional, dedicated team, which has moved mountains to ensure Estonia’s energy security. Synchronizing the Estonian power grid with the frequency used in Continental Europe will have a significant impact on both national security and increasing security of supply for our consumers.”

Kont has previously held various positions at the Internal Security Service, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of the Interior as well as diplomatic service for Estonia’s accession to the EU and NATO. In the private sector, he has worked in the field of strategic consultation and training.

The Baltic states plan to connect their electricity networks to the Continental Europe frequency area by the end of 2025.
