The dismantling of the 110 kV overhead electricity lines and pylons started in Mustamäe, Tallinn, the result of which will be the removal of the cumbersome eyesore of the high-voltage line along Siili Street and its surroundings from the view of residents.

The initiative forms part of Elering’s larger project to gradually remove high-voltage lines that have reached the end of their service lives from the densely populated areas of Tallinn. The installation of cable lines in place of overhead lines provides an opportunity to use the land that previously fell within the line protection zones for activities to improve the living conditions of people living in the city. For residents, this also means a more attractive living environment.

Besides Siili Street, the city’s line corridors along Tammsaare, Kadaka, Mustamäe, Nõmme, Retke and Rahumäe Roads, as well as Sõpruse Avenue and Elektroni Street, will also become much clearer.

The new 6.2 km-long Veskimetsa-Järve cable line that is replacing the Veskimetsa-Järve 110 kV line runs along Kadaka, Ehitajate, Vilde and Sütiste Roads and Tervise Street. The cost of the project was approximately 2.6 million euros excluding VAT.

Over the next few years, Elering will build tens of kilometres of new cable lines in order to improve safety and reduce visual pollution. In 2015, the Järve-Endla and Veskimetsa-Endla underground cable lines were completed. In the coming year, the Harku-Veskimetsa, Harku-Kadaka and Veskimetsa-Kadaka underground cable lines will be installed in the Mustamäe and Haabersti area. In the Kopli and Volta areas of Northern Tallinn, new underground cable lines will be completed in 2020 according to the current timetable.
