A meeting is taking place in Tallinn on Tuesday between the heads of the transmission system operators (TSOs) of the Baltic States, Finland, Sweden and Poland, which will address the major challenges faced by the electricity systems in the coming years.

The TSOs will review the status of the local electricity system’s largest development projects, and will discuss the region’s production capacity situation, the implementation of pan-European Grid Codes, the desynchronisation of the Baltic States’ electricity systems from the Russian grid, further electricity market merger projects, and the development of the smart grid and cross-border data exchange.

In the area of desynchronisation, there will be, among other things, discussions regarding the technical studies that will be conducted in the coming months. A study will be carried out in partnership between the TSOs of the Baltic States and Poland on the stability of the systems upon the connection of the Baltic States with the continental European frequency area. The second study, to be carried out by the three Baltic TSOs, will focus on maintaining frequency, necessary reserves, and the costs involved.

The Tallinn meeting will be attended by managers from Elering, Latvia’s AST, Lithuania’s Litgrid, Poland’s PSE, Sweden’s Svenska Kraftnät and Finland’s Fingrid.
