Elering has concluded a contract with ABB AS for the complete renovation of the Orissaare 110-kilovolt substation on Saaremaa. The project will cost 1.58 million euros, and is scheduled for completion by December 2018.

The current Orissaare 110-kilovolt substation was built at the end of 1970. The equipment is in poor condition, and there have been breakdowns in the apparatus. The construction of the new substation will improve the reliability of Saaremaa’s electricity supply.

The new Orissaare substation will come with a two-section switchyard, which will allow connections with two overhead lines and two power transformers. The substation will also receive a new control building, and drainage will be installed on the territory. In addition, relay protection, control, and automation systems will be connected at the substation. The substation renovation includes, among other things, installation of new 110-kilovolt undersea cables in the Väike and Suur Väin straits.

Over the next few years, Elering will invest tens of millions of euros to improve the security of supply to the largest western Estonian islands.
