Elering hosted the European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič yesterday on Sept 19 in Estonian emergency reserve power plants established for raising the electricity security of supply. The main topic of the meeting was the desynchronization of the Baltic States.

Elering explained the circumstances that determine the need for desynchronization of the Baltic States and the conditions that have to be fulfilled during the process.

„In the first order we need to find the short-term solution that holds the lights on at homes in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania when we should separate from the united electricity system of Russia unexpectedly for some reasons,“ Elering’s chairman of the board Taavi Veskimägi said.

Readiness for the short-term island mode gives the opportunity to work out the long- term solution for the cooperation between Baltic and rest of the European electricity systems. „Long-term solution has to be market- based, acceptable for the consumers in terms of cost and at the same time to ensure the security of supply on sufficient level,“ Veskimägi explained.
