Today, 8 June, Elering signed an energy consumption management agreement with Energia Juhtimiskeskus OÜ for a pilot project that enables consumers to earn money through smart energy consumption and allows Elering to maintain the Estonian electricity system more efficiently.

The signed agreement is a pilot project for electricity consumption management and more active consumption in the electricity market, which gives consumers the opportunity to participate directly in the operation of the Estonian electricity system. If Estonia’s electricity consumption is lower than forecast or if production is higher at a specific hour, Elering can allow the contract partner to buy or sell electricity to increase or decrease consumption.

According to chairman of the Elering board, Taavi Veskimägi, such a cooperation form is needed for Elering to have more opportunities to balance the Estonian electricity system and serve consumers who have implemented smart energy consumption, thereby reducing their energy costs as a whole. “The agreement gives Elering additional opportunities to ensure the security of supply in the Estonian electricity system, in particular in situations where some production apparatus unexpectedly switches off and production does not meet the expected output,” said Veskimägi.

At the signing of the agreement, Energia Juhtimiskeskus OÜ CEO Tarvo Õng acknowledged that they are gathering dozens of large consumers and have analysed hundreds of companies around Estonia. “Companies from cold storage warehouses and hotels to farms and manufacturing companies have been involved in smart energy consumption management. Actually, all those consumers whose production processes or consumption allows temporary flexibility or switching to alternative sources can participate,” said Õng. “Conscious electricity consumption already means significant cost reductions for companies, and an agreement with Elering gives the option of earning revenue, among other things.”

Energia Juhtimiskeskus is bringing together companies that are ready and able to manage and change their energy consumption, but whose volumes are not sufficient to provide electricity system balancing services to Elering.

The agreement between Elering and Energia Juhtimiskeskus regulates data exchange conditions, electricity trading periods, as well as the procedures for energy supply.

The agreement was signed by chairman of the Elering board, Taavi Veskimägi, and member of the board of Energia Juhtimiskeskus Tarvo Õng.

The consumption management pilot project is also open to other interested parties. The active participation of consumers in the electricity market will play a significant role in ensuring security of supply as well in the future and Elering encourages all consumers to actively participate in the market.
