Volli Kalm, Rector of the University of Tartu, and Taavi Veskimägi, Chairman of the Board of Elering, signed a protocol of intent in Tallinn on Thursday. The purpose of the protocol between the University of Tartu and Elering is to work together to improve energy-related research and development activities carried out in Estonia.

The protocol of intent, signed by the University of Tartu and Elering, is designed to promote tie-ins between scientific research and practical developments in the energy sector. “Closer cooperation between the University of Tartu and Elering AS will allow us to intensify research in the field of high-efficiency energy systems at the various institutes of the University of Tartu, supporting the work on the development of so-called smart grids and equipment for the conversion and storage of renewable energy from sources such as wind, solar and biomass power,” said Enn Lust, Director of the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Tartu. According to Lust, there is already cooperation in progress on conducting research in the field of methane synthesis.

Taavi Veskimägi, Chairman of the Board of Elering, said that Elering’s strategic goal involves contributing to the systemic development of energy-related competence. “We see Elering as an energy competence center that forms a part of a network that comprises universities, state agencies, European electrical and natural gas transmission system operators and other partners. Cooperation with the University of Tartu expands our opportunities for achieving this goal,” he added.

The daily activities of Elering and the University of Tartu contribute to research and development in fields related to energy studies, the promotion of education in the sector, and increasing general awareness of energy issues.

The protocol of intent is meant to improve these activities by increasing the existing level of cooperation on the implementation of joint projects, as well as actively participating in the process of updating Estonia’s energy economy development plan, in which both partners are already involved.
