The HVDC interconnection between Estonia and Finland, EstLink 2, is operational again since Sunday morning (September 14). However, in order to avoid further problems, it might prove necessary upgrading the return circuit’s joints on the land cable that have caused both previous faults.

Until clearing the EstLink 2 cable fault, there is a substantial risk for the fault to repeat itself in other sections of the return circuit.

Activities for finding a reliable solution and necessary design changes to the joint have started. In order to carry out the repair works of EstLink 2, it is necessary to restore the functioning of EstLink 1 in order to ensure connection capacity of at least 350 MW between Estonia and Finland during the works.

EstLink 2 switched off due to a fault last Tuesday, September 9.
