Natural Gas Imports from Lithuania Represent 17 Per Cent of Total Gas Imports in February

In February, Estonia imported 58.5 million cubic metres of natural gas, of which 10 million cubic metres, that is 17 per cent of total imports, was comprised of gas bought from Lithuania by new gas market participants. Eesti Gaas imported the remaining 83 per cent of the month’s total.

Natural gas imports from Lithuania started in December, when gas bought from there by the balance responsible party Baltic Energy Partners constituted 0.6 per cent of Estonia’s total imports. In January, the share of natural gas bought from Lithuania increased substantially, to 8.6 per cent. At the beginning of February, Reola Gaas also began buying gas from Lithuania.

In February, the total quantity of natural gas imported to Estonia decreased by 7.6 per cent year-on-year. One of the reasons for the slump was the somewhat warmer weather compared to last year.

82.7 million cubic metres of gas moved between Latvia and Russia through the Estonian gas transmission network.

Based on the price formula provided by Eesti Gaas, Elering estimates that the average price of gas shipped to Estonia was 30.10 euros per megawatt-hour in February.
