Consumption of natural gas falls by one-tenth in H1
Eleven per cent less natural gas was consumed in Estonia in the first half of this year, consumption totalling 2720 gigawatt-hours.
Likewise, 11 per cent less natural gas was imported – 2723 gigawatt-hours. Gas mainly entered Estonia through the Karksi and Värska gas metering stations.
Natural gas transit between Russia and Latvia via the transmission pipeline in south-eastern Estonia grew nearly fivefold in H1 – for a total of 5942 gigawatt-hours.
The largest quantity of natural gas that entered the country in a 24-hour period in the half-year ended was 35.5 gigawatt-hours in January, and the lowest 24-hour quantity was 4.8 gigawatt-hours in June. The maximum corresponding quantity during the same period last year was 48.6 gigawatt-hours in February, and the lowest was 0.1 gigawatt-hour in June.
As of the end of the half-year, the reserve capacity in the transmission pipeline is 41.6 gigawatt-hours, and as of the end of June last year it stood at 38 gigawatt-hours.
During the first half of the year, 30 gigawatt-hours of biomethane was produced in Estonia, primarily from wastewater sludge, manure and biomass. The output was used completely in the transport sector. The production of biomethane was started last April and a total of 40 gigawatt-hours was produced over the course of last year. The Estonian government’s goal is to reach use of at least 10% renewable fuels in the transport sector by 2020, part of which would be covered by biomethane. A total of 2.65 million euros in subsidies was paid to biomethane producers in the first half of this year. Last year, 1.36 million euros in subsidies was paid for the entire year.
As a result of balance settlement in June, the balance administrators’ portfolios’ shares were as followed based on consumption:
