Natural gas consumption drops 8 per cent in August
In August, 188 gigawatt-hours of natural gas was directed from Elering’s transmission network to consumers, which was 8 per cent less than in the same period a year ago.
Natural gas import to Estonia was 179.3 gigawatt-hours last month, which is slightly more than 10 per cent less than in July and down close to 12 per cent from a year ago. Most of the gas was imported through the Värska gas metering station. The lowest quantity of natural gas to reach Estonia in a 24-hour period was 3 gigawatt-hours and the largest quantity was 8.4 gigawatt-hours.
In total, 3.98 terawatt-hours of gas passed through the transmission network in August, of which 3.8 terawatt-hours was transit flow, which increased by two-thirds from August 2017. The transmission pipeline capacity reserve in August was 34 gigawatt-hours, 20 per cent less than last year.
The price of natural gas traded on the Lithuanian gas exchange GET Baltic was 22.85 euros per megawatt-hours in the Estonian bidding area, rising 2.5 per cent compared to July. In Latvia, the average price was 23.02 euros/MWh and in Lithuania, 23.12 euros/MWh. The average system price in the Baltics was 23.1 euros. On Finland’s Kaasupörssi, the comparable price was 22.92 euros/MWh.
According to data from Elering’s smart grid platform Estfeed, there were close to 56,200 gas metering points as of the end of August. A total of 54,850 places of consumption had an agreement for purchasing gas and 1,340 places of consumption bought gas from the network service provider under universal service. Agreements were extended and new agreements were concluded on close to 300 occasions.
