Elering signed a contract with ABB AS on Monday for the renovation of the 110-kilovolt Ida high-voltage substation in the district of Lasnamäe, Tallinn. Work will cost 2.3 million euros excluding VAT.

The Ida substation provides an important guarantee for Lasnamäe’s security of supply, while also contributing to the electricity supply in the Iru and Tallinn city centre areas. Lines running from the substation run to Lasnamäe, Iru, and the Ranna substation located in the Tallinn city centre.

A new switchgear and control building will be built during the Ida substation upgrades. Although typically the high-voltage substation switchgear operates in outside conditions, in the case of the Ida substation, the external switchgear apparatus is being installed inside the building in order to minimise the visual impacts of the substation on the surrounding environment.

The need to renovate the Ida substation arises from the fact that many essential components are currently not in a satisfactory technical state or are insufficiently reliable. Following the renovation of the substation, the safety and environmental protection situation will also improve.

The Ida substation upgrade works are scheduled for completion by the end of 2017.
