Elering is continuing to swap out the transmission grid’s overhead lines with underground cables in Tallinn, with the next cable replacing the Veskimetsa-Järve overhead line.

The public procurement for the construction of the Veskimetsa-Järve underground cable was won by the joint offer from the Estonian OÜ Baltros GEM Grupp and Lithuanian company UAB “Kauno energetikos remontas.” The project will cost approximately 2.6 million euros excluding VAT.

The installation of the Veskimetsa-Järve underground cable, which has a total length of 6.2 kilometres, will happen in stages. The technical side of the project will be completed in the coming months, the cable will be energised by summer 2017, and the entire project will be completed by the end of the same year.

After the completion of the new underground cable line, the existing Veskimetsa-Järve overhead line, which runs from the Veskimetsa substation on Kadaka Road through the area of Tildri and Siili Streets along Retke Road and Elektroni Street to the Järve substation. The new cable will be installed between the same substations along Kadaka, Ehitajate, Vilde and Sütiste Roads and Tervise Street.

Together with the new Veskimetsa-Järve underground cable, Elering will be installing a new substation in the Mustamäe district of Tallinn, where the distribution network operator Elektrilevi wishes to join the transmission network. The substation will be located on Vilde Road.

The procurement for the construction of the Mustamäe substation was won by AS Merko Infra with a tender of more than 1.2 million euros. The substation will be completed according to the schedule by the end of 2017 as well.

This year, Elering completed the construction of the new connecting Ranna-Ida underground cable in Tallinn city centre and Lasnamäe. In recent years, the new Volta-Ranna, Järve-Endla, and Veskimetsa-Endla underground cables have also been built.

In the next few years, Elering will replace overhead lines in the Mustamäe and Northern Tallinn districts with several more underground cables.
