Last month, an unusually large volume of electricity moved from Latvia to Estonia and from Estonia to Finland compared to the usual direction from the Nordic countries to the Baltic states.

In November, power flows moved from Latvia to Estonia for 37 per cent of the hours and the full capacity given to the market was used for eight per cent of the hours in that direction. From Latvia, 61 gigawatt-hours of electricity traded on the day-ahead market reached Estonia during the month, compared to almost nine gigawatt-hours during the period from the beginning of the year to the end of October.

In November, power flows between Estonia and Finland were directed from Estonia to Finland for three quarters of the hours and from Finland to Estonia for only 10 per cent of the hours. Full capacity given to the whole market was used on the Estonia-Finland direction for about seven per cent of the hours.

The electricity exchange price increased in all price areas of the Nord Pool Nordic electricity exchange in November, with the smallest price increase in Latvia and Lithuania.

In the Estonian price area, the price increased almost nine per cent in comparison with October, reaching 40.86 euros per megawatt-hour. When compared to the electricity price in Estonia, the Finnish price area was 16 cents higher, while the Latvian and Lithuanian price areas were 39 cents and 29 cents lower, respectively.

The Nord Pool system price increased by 18.5 per cent in a monthly comparison, reaching 38.8 euros per megawatt-hour.

In November, Elering saw profits of 831,109 euros from cross-border transmission capacity distribution, of which 715,680 euros came from risk hedging instruments and 115,429 euros as a cross-border capacity auction profit.

Carbon dioxide emission quota prices, which influence the price of electricity, remained between 4.56 and 6.5 euros per tonne, while the trading range was between 5.21 and 5.95 euros in October.

According to the last trading day of November on the Nasdaq OMX market, the electricity price in the Estonian price area is expected to be 38.2 euros per megawatt-hour in December. The expected price in Finland is 37.4 and in Latvia is 41 euros per megawatt-hour.
