Elering concluded an agreement with Merko Infra on Monday for the renovation of the Ranna substation in Tallinn’s city centre, which will cost around two million euros excluding VAT.

The Ranna substation is located in the vicinity of Viru Keskus, at Gonsiori 3a, and serves a significant part of the Tallinn city centre, including the area’s business quarters. Following upgrades, the substation’s electricity circuitry will become more reliable.

Ranna substation reconstruction work will be done under the turnkey method. The volume of work includes design, reconstruction of the depreciated substation building, supply of new high-voltage equipment, relays and control devices, electrical work, and adjustment work. Upgrade work on the substation start in August and will continue until November 2019.

Reconstruction of the substation, which is located in a confined space, will be carried out in two phases in order to ensure electricity supply in the city centre during renovations. Due to limited space, isolated 110-kilovolt rods will be installed for the first time in Estonia, ensuring high power transmission despite the limited space.

The current Ranna substation was built in 1979 as part of the construction programme for the Olympic sailing events.
