Estonian gas TSO Elering Gaas AS and Finnish state owned company Baltic Connector OY together sent out grant application to European Commission for co-financing the construction of the Estonian-Finnish gas interconnector Balticconnector.

In addition to that, Elering Gaas AS applied for grant for enhancement of Estonian-Latvian interconnection enabling gas transport in both directions. Currently, gas can only be transported from Latvia to Estonia.

“Just few weeks ago it was rather uncertain whether it was possible to fill all preconditions for the grant application. I can’t overvalue prompt and constructive efforts of all Estonian and Finnish stakeholders in the grant application process,” Chairman of Elering Gaas’ Supervisory Board Taavi Veskimägi said.

According to current plan Balticconnector will be commissioned by 2019.

Balticconnector and reconstructed Estonian-Latvian gas interconnection are vital steps in development of Finnish-Baltic gas market which should operate in efficient and transparent manner by 2020.
