Elering will take over the Värska gas-metering station from the construction company on Wednesday 20 December. The construction cost more than 2.9 million euros and is the biggest investment in the Southern Estonia gas infrastructure in recent history.

“The entirely remotely operated and precisely adjustable Värska gas metering station is important to enhance efficiency of the gas transmission network and to ensure accurate cross-border gas trade for market participants,” commented Elering’s Chairman of the Board, Taavi Veskimägi.

The gas metering station built in the course of renovation work comprises two gas flow control lines with a capacity of 200,000 cubic metres per hour and three chromatographs to measure gas composition. In addition, a new control building, with servers, a gas generator for emergency electricity supply, a boiler room for heating the gas and a testing and control room were constructed for the gas metering station.

As the new gas metering station is fully automated, Elering will no longer have a need for on-site staff. The amount and pressure of gas moving through the station can be changed and the composition of gas can be controlled from the energy control centre in Tallinn.

The new Värska gas metering station was built by Lithuanian company MT Group UAB and German company PPS Pipeline Systems GmbH.

Elering also has a tender in progress for upgrading the Karksi gas metering station, which is part of the Estonia-Finland Balticconnector gas connection project and, with the latter, a significant presumption for a potential gas market that would comprise the Baltic countries and Finland.
