The cold weather from the first half of 2nd week of February boosted natural gas consumption in Estonia up to twofold in some places.

The highest gas consumption volume was on Tuesday, when during the 24-hour period, almost 3.9 million cubic metres of gas went from the Elering-managed gas transmission network to distribution networks, that is in the direction of end consumers. The same figure from Monday and Wednesday this week was 3.3 million cubic metres.

On the 1st week of Febryary, when the weather was still noticeably warmer, daily gas consumption ranged between 1.9–2.2 million cubic metres.

Based on data from the National Weather Service, the average daily air temperature, for example on Wednesday, 8 February on the Estonian mainland, was in the region of 10–14 degrees below zero. A week earlier, on 1 February, the average air temperature was around zero everywhere in Estonia.

The 2nd February week’s volumes are still considerably below historical gas consumption peak. Estonia’s all-time gas consumption peak has totalled 6.8 million cubic metres per day.
